Oil services company Aker Solutions has delivered the subsea compression system for Statoil-operated Åsgard field in the Norwegian Sea, which has gone on-stream.

Aker Solutions chief executive officer Luis Araujo said: "The close collaboration we’ve had with Statoil and our suppliers has been essential to ensure the successful delivery of this breakthrough technology."

In December 2010, Statoil has awarded the contract to Aker Solutions to deliver the system, which has been designed for large flow-rates and is of particular value for developments in deepwater and harsh environment areas.

The system comprised modules for two identical sets of compressors, pumps, scrubbers and coolers, fitted together in an 1,800mt steel frame and were delivered to Statoil ready for installation on the seafloor of the Åsgard field.

"Thanks to the new compressor solution, we will achieve increased recovery rates both at Midgard and Mikkel, extending the reservoirs’ productive lives until 2032."

For the field development, Aker Solutions has supported Statoil for installation, testing and start-up activities.

According to Statoil, subsea compression will add 306 million barrels of oil equivalent to total output over the life of the field.

Åsgard operations senior vice-president Siri Espedal Kindem said: "Thanks to the new compressor solution we will achieve increased recovery rates both at Midgard and Mikkel, extending the reservoirs’ productive lives until 2032."

The project worth Nkr19bn ($2.32bn), started in 2005 and the plan for development and operation, was approved in 2012.

Until completion, eleven million man-hours expected to have been spent from the beginning and more than 40 new technologies have been developed and employed.

License partners of the Åsgard field are Petoro, Eni Norge, Total E&P Norge and ExxonMobil E&P Norway.
